Botanical Dreaming

I recently attended a two-day workshop presented by Mark Johnson and Bobbie Turner here in Boulder. It was based on Mark’s book, Botanical Dreaming, and focused on making creative images of flowers using both in-camera techniques and Photoshop. The workshop was one of the best I have attended; it left me both energized and inspired. I also came away with several good images. Despite all of the colorful flowers, this turned out to be one of my favorites. It’s a straight photograph of a Dahlia taken with a shallow depth of field. I converted it to black and white and toned it in Photoshop, then added a decorative edge effect.
