Glacier Lilies

For the past couple of weeks, we have been in Crested Butte, CO viewing and photographing wildflowers – something we haven’t done for quite a while. The wet winter and spring have given us a spectacular show.

We arrived early in the season in hopes of finding some Glacier Lilies. These amazing flowers bloom at the edge of the snow melt and can often be seen pushing through the snow. The morning after we arrived, we found fields of them growing along the road to Lake Irwin as well as up at the lake. This year, the snowpack has been so high that there is melting snow everywhere at the higher altitudes. We even found Glacier Lilies growing in Ohio Pass yesterday.

Here’s another of the infinite looks that these wildflowers offer.

Engine 683

I took this photo several years ago at the Colorado Railroad Museum. It’s an HDR image and, while the result was very nice, it didn’t move me. It looked like something I would have produced in the ’70s using Ektachrome slide film. Among other things, the blank blue sky was a killer. At the time, I tried several different treatments (including some texture overlays) but wasn’t able to come up with anything that I liked. Several weeks ago, I ran across the image again and decided to try a water-color-filled line drawing treatment. This didn’t work either; but, working with the image inspired me to try some newer textures. Things came together quickly after that and I’m very happy with the results. Persistence pays — and it’s especially fun to rediscover an old image with a fresh eye.

A New Kaleidoscape

This week, I was inspired to work on Kaleidoscapes again. This one was made from an orchid photo by rotating and reflecting a wedge of the photo 32 times. To see more Kaleidoscapes, click here.
