Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden — a botanical garden in Hawaii County, Hawaii — is a lesser-known subject for landscape photographers. The nearest town is Pāpa‘ikou, about 2.6 km (1.6 mi) away (Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden lies N of town).

The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden covers 17 acres (6.9 ha) at the entrance of the Onomea Valley on the coast in Hāmākua on Hawaii Island of Hawaii. The boardwalk descends into a rainforest canopy of palms and tree ferns, opening to winding paved paths lined with over 2500 species of tropical plants, including anthuriums, gingers, bromeliads, heliconias, and over 270 species of orchids. Dan J. Lutkenhouse purchased the property in 1977, and opened it to the public in 1984. Today, the garden is a nonprofit organization that continues to promote education, protect native and endemic plants, and foster tourism. From the Wikipedia article “Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden”, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Milky Way & night sky

From Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, the Milky Way core is visible in a dark sky from February through October. June gives the longest window (about 7.8 hours on a moonless night), and the core peaks around 41° above the southern horizon. Our light-pollution model puts the sky at about Bortle 4 (rural / suburban transition), good enough for detailed Milky Way images.
