Ke'anae Arboretum is a botanical garden in Maui County, Hawaii. It lies in or next to Haleakalā National Park, so park hours, fees and rules apply. The nearest town is Wailua, about 1.6 km (1.0 mi) away (Ke'anae Arboretum lies WNW of town).
Keʻanae Arboretum (6 acres or 2.4 hectares) is an arboretum and botanical garden located on the Hana Highway (Highway 360) about 1-mile (1.6 km) west of Keʻanae, Maui, Hawaiʻi, United States. Before the 1940s the land the Arboretum sits on was used to farm food, medicine and fiber-producing plants. From 1946 until the mid-1950s, it became an agricultural work site for prisoners at Ke'anae Prison Camp. It was established as an arboretum in 1971. The arboretum lies alongside the Piinaau Stream on taro cultivation terraces and within a rainforest, and contains two short walking trails. It contains about 150 varieties of native and introduced tropical plants, including gingers, hibiscus, papaya, and various types of taro. Trees are labeled with common name, scientific name, and origin. From the Wikipedia article “Keʻanae Arboretum”, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Milky Way & night sky
From Ke'anae Arboretum, the Milky Way core is visible in a dark sky from February through October. June gives the longest window (about 7.7 hours on a moonless night), and the core peaks around 40° above the southern horizon. Our light-pollution model puts the sky at about Bortle 3 (rural sky), good enough for detailed Milky Way images.

Window when the galactic core is at least 10° high during astronomical darkness on the 15th of each month. Pick nights within a few days of the new moon. Plan exact nights with the Milky Way planner.
Estimated sky darkness: 3 Bortle 3 — Rural sky. Some light domes sit on the horizon, but the Milky Way still looks complex overhead. Modeled zenith brightness ≈ 21.53 mag/arcsec².
Weather & best season
Long-term NASA satellite data for this area show August as the clearest month (about 36% average cloud cover) and March as the cloudiest (53%). August is the warmest month and February the coldest, which matters for gear, snow access and how long batteries last at night.

Photography tips for this botanical garden
- Kaleidoscopic and abstract images are great for flower close-ups — try the online kaleidoscope tool.
- A macro lens or close-up filter opens a world of detail — try a shallow aperture against a soft background.
- Many gardens restrict tripods or charge for photography; check the rules before you go.
- Backlit petals glow; position yourself so the sun is behind the flower.
- Shoot RAW to keep the most latitude for high-contrast sunrise and sunset scenes.
Season: Spring bulbs and blossoms, summer perennials and autumn color; glasshouses offer winter subjects.
Suggested gear: Macro lens, Diffuser, Small reflector. Work out exposures with the depth of field, ND filter and NPF rule calculators.
Permits, drones & access
National Park Service rules. Under federal law (54 U.S.C. 100905), still photography in National Park Service areas needs a permit only when it (1) takes place where members of the public are not allowed, (2) uses models, sets or props that are not part of the location's natural or cultural resources or administrative facilities, or (3) would cause the park to incur additional administrative costs to monitor the activity. Ordinary visitor and most landscape photography needs no permit. Commercial filming rules are separate and have changed in recent years — confirm current requirements with the park before a paid shoot.
Drones: Launching, landing or operating unmanned aircraft (drones) is prohibited in National Park Service units under a 2014 Superintendent's closure (36 CFR 1.5), except where a park has issued specific written approval. Flying from outside the boundary over park land can also violate park rules and disturb wildlife.
