The Nikon Z f uses the Nikon Z mount with a 1.00× crop factor (about 36.0 × 24.0 mm sensor), 24.5 megapixels, announced in 2023. Below: equivalent focal lengths, maximum shutter speeds for sharp stars, a hyperfocal distance chart, compatible lenses and how to check the shutter count.

Milky Way exposure: NPF and 500 rule

| 50 mm | 4.8 s | 5.5 s | 3.1 s | 10.0 s |
NPF = (35 × f-number + 30 × pixel pitch) ÷ focal length, with a pixel pitch of 5.94 µm (from 24.5 MP). The strict version (Michaud's detailed NPF for the galactic core) gives pin-point stars at 100% view; the 500 rule is a loose rule of thumb that shows trailing on modern sensors.
Hyperfocal distance chart

| 14 mm | 2.3 m | 1.2 m | 0.8 m | 0.6 m | 0.4 m |
| 16 mm | 3.1 m | 1.5 m | 1.1 m | 0.8 m | 0.5 m |
| 18 mm | 3.9 m | 1.9 m | 1.4 m | 1.0 m | 0.7 m |
| 20 mm | 4.8 m | 2.4 m | 1.7 m | 1.2 m | 0.9 m |
| 24 mm | 6.9 m | 3.5 m | 2.4 m | 1.8 m | 1.2 m |
| 28 mm | 9.4 m | 4.7 m | 3.3 m | 2.4 m | 1.7 m |
| 35 mm | 15 m | 7.3 m | 5.1 m | 3.7 m | 2.6 m |
| 50 mm | 30 m | 15 m | 10 m | 7.6 m | 5.3 m |
Focus at the hyperfocal distance and everything from half that distance to infinity is acceptably sharp (circle of confusion 0.03 mm). Use the hyperfocal calculator for other settings.
Maximum print size
| Print resolution | Inches | Centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| 150 ppi | 40.4 × 26.9 in | 103 × 68 cm |
| 200 ppi | 30.3 × 20.2 in | 77 × 51 cm |
| 240 ppi | 25.3 × 16.8 in | 64 × 43 cm |
| 300 ppi | 20.2 × 13.5 in | 51 × 34 cm |
300 ppi suits close viewing; 150–200 ppi is plenty for large prints viewed from a distance.

How to check the Nikon Z f shutter count
Nikon writes the shutter count into the MakerNotes of every JPEG and NEF. Upload a fresh, unedited file to an EXIF viewer or run `exiftool -ShutterCount image.nef`.
ExifTool tag: ShutterCount. Always test an original, unedited file straight from the card.
