The Sony Alpha 99 uses the Sony Alpha mount with a 1.00× crop factor (about 35.8 × 23.9 mm sensor), 24.3 megapixels, announced in 2012. Below: equivalent focal lengths, maximum shutter speeds for sharp stars, a hyperfocal distance chart, compatible lenses and how to check the shutter count.

NPF = (35 × f-number + 30 × pixel pitch) ÷ focal length, with a pixel pitch of 5.93 µm (from 24.3 MP). The strict version (Michaud's detailed NPF for the galactic core) gives pin-point stars at 100% view; the 500 rule is a loose rule of thumb that shows trailing on modern sensors.
Hyperfocal distance chart

| 16 mm | 3.1 m | 1.5 m | 1.1 m | 0.8 m | 0.6 m |
| 18 mm | 3.9 m | 2.0 m | 1.4 m | 1.0 m | 0.7 m |
| 20 mm | 4.8 m | 2.4 m | 1.7 m | 1.2 m | 0.9 m |

| 50 mm | 30 m | 15 m | 11 m | 7.7 m | 5.3 m |
Focus at the hyperfocal distance and everything from half that distance to infinity is acceptably sharp (circle of confusion 0.0299 mm). Use the hyperfocal calculator for other settings.
Maximum print size
| Print resolution | Inches | Centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| 150 ppi | 40.2 × 26.8 in | 102 × 68 cm |
| 200 ppi | 30.2 × 20.1 in | 77 × 51 cm |
| 240 ppi | 25.2 × 16.8 in | 64 × 43 cm |
| 300 ppi | 20.1 × 13.4 in | 51 × 34 cm |
300 ppi suits close viewing; 150–200 ppi is plenty for large prints viewed from a distance.

How to check the Sony Alpha 99 shutter count
Most Sony Alpha bodies record the count in MakerNotes. Use `exiftool -ShutterCount -ShutterCount2 image.arw` on an unedited file.
ExifTool tag: ShutterCount / ShutterCount2. Always test an original, unedited file straight from the card.
