Fall Foliage Photography

Nature

Autumn color lasts only a few weeks in any one place, but it moves: down mountainsides, south across the country and from the edges of lakes into the forest.

When color peaks

  • High Rockies (aspens): mid-September to early October.
  • New England and the Upper Midwest: late September to mid-October.
  • Appalachians: early October in the north and at high elevation, into early November in the south and lowlands.
  • Southeast and California valleys: late October to November.

Within one area, color starts at higher elevations and moves down over two to four weeks. Cold, sunny days and cool (not freezing) nights give the most vivid reds. Drought and early frost can cut the season short; a big windstorm can end it overnight.

Light and weather

  • Overcast saturates color in the forest and removes harsh shadows.
  • Backlight makes leaves glow like stained glass — look up into the canopy.
  • After rain, wet bark turns black and makes colors pop.
  • Fog in valleys at sunrise isolates layers of colored hills.

The polarizer

A circular polarizer is essential in autumn. It removes the waxy glare on leaves, revealing true color, and deepens blue skies. Rotate it while watching the foliage. Remove it for backlit shots, where glare is part of the glow.

Composition ideas

  • Grand landscape: a ridge of color under a dramatic sky from an overlook.
  • Reflections: still lakes double the color — see photographing reflections.
  • Intimate scenes: one red maple among green pines; a stream with fallen leaves.
  • Classic Americana: covered bridges, barns and churches framed by maples.
  • Details: a single leaf on a rock, frost on a fallen leaf.
  • Long exposures: leaves circling in an eddy become swirls at 2–5 seconds.

Practical tips

  • Scout with recent observations and local foliage reports; peak shifts every year.
  • Weekdays and sunrise avoid the leaf-peeper crowds at famous spots.
  • Shoot RAW and be gentle with saturation — autumn color is easy to overdo.
