Slot Canyon Photography

Locations

Slot canyons — narrow, sculpted passages in sandstone — glow with reflected light in shades of orange, red and violet. Places like Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon in Arizona are among the most photographed landscapes on Earth.

How the light works

Direct sun rarely reaches the bottom. Instead, light bounces from wall to wall, warming as it goes. The glow is strongest when the sun is high — late morning to early afternoon — and when sunlit walls are just out of frame. In some canyons, midday shafts of direct light (beams) hit the floor in summer.

Settings

  • Tripod if allowed, low ISO, f/8–f/11, exposures of 1–10 seconds.
  • Expose for the highlights — bright patches near the opening clip easily. Bracket if you can.
  • Avoid sky in the frame; it's many stops brighter than the walls.
  • White balance: auto or daylight both work; shoot RAW and adjust. Too much warmth looks fake.
  • Wide lens (14–24 mm) for passages; normal or short tele (35–85 mm) for abstract wall patterns.

Tours and rules

Antelope Canyon and many other slots on Navajo Nation land are accessible only with authorized guides, and tripods may be restricted to special photography tours. Book ahead in spring and summer.

Protect your gear

Fine sand gets everywhere. Avoid changing lenses inside the canyon, use a rain cover or bag, and clean gear carefully afterward with a blower (never a cloth on a sandy lens).

Flash flood safety

Never enter a slot canyon if rain is possible anywhere in the watershed — storms miles away can send a wall of water through without warning. Check forecasts and local flood warnings, especially during the summer monsoon (July–September), and follow guides' instructions.

Composition ideas

  • Curving walls as leading lines toward a bright opening.
  • Abstract textures and shapes — swirls that suggest figures or faces.
  • Sand pouring off a ledge in a light beam (some guides demonstrate this on tours).
  • People for scale, in narrow passages.
