Long Knife Peak is a mountain peak in Flathead County, Montana at about 2,959 m (9,708 ft) above sea level. The nearest town is Whitefish, about 66 km (41 mi) away (Long Knife Peak lies N of town).
Long Knife Peak (9,789 feet (2,984 m)) is located in the Clark Range, Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. Though much of the mountain slopes extend into the Canadian Province of British Columbia, the main summit is in the U.S. Long Knife Peak rises more than a vertical 1 mile (1.6 km) above Upper Kintla Lake. It is also the most northerly peak and land area in the contiguous United States above 9,000 feet (2,743 m). Long Knife Peak is on an east west ridgeline identified as the "Boundary Mountains" on the USGS 7.5 minute topo quad and this extended ridge, with peak 8864, also contains the most northerly named (numbered) peak and land area in the contiguous United States above 8,000 feet (2,438 m).From the Wikipedia article “Long Knife Peak”, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Milky Way & night sky
From Long Knife Peak, the Milky Way core is visible in a dark sky from May through July. June gives the longest window (about 2.5 hours on a moonless night), and the core peaks around 12° above the southern horizon. Our light-pollution model puts the sky at about Bortle 1 (excellent dark-sky site), which is excellent for astrophotography.

Window when the galactic core is at least 10° high during astronomical darkness on the 15th of each month. Pick nights within a few days of the new moon. Plan exact nights with the Milky Way planner.
Estimated sky darkness: 1 Bortle 1 — Excellent dark-sky site. The Milky Way casts faint shadows; zodiacal light and airglow are obvious. Modeled zenith brightness ≈ 21.94 mag/arcsec². Aurora needs roughly Kp 3.5+ to show low on the northern horizon here.
Weather & best season
Long-term NASA satellite data for this area show July as the clearest month (about 38% average cloud cover) and December as the cloudiest (81%). July is the warmest month and December the coldest, which matters for gear, snow access and how long batteries last at night.

Photography tips for this mountain peak
- Long lenses compress ridgelines; shoot the peak from several miles away to make it look massive.
- Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer at high elevations — plan summit hikes for early morning.
- Snow on the summit holds detail best when you expose for the highlights and lift shadows later.
- Alpenglow lasts only a few minutes; set up and focus beforehand.
- Clouds around the summit add drama — a clear blue sky is often the least interesting condition.
- Scout in daylight if you plan to shoot at night or before sunrise.
Season: Early summer keeps snow on the peaks with green valleys below; autumn adds aspen or larch color in many ranges.
Suggested gear: Telephoto lens, Lightweight tripod, Warm layers, Microspikes in shoulder seasons. Work out exposures with the depth of field, ND filter and NPF rule calculators.
