How to Photograph a Sunrise

Light

Sunrise is quieter than sunset: fewer people, calmer air, cooler colors that warm by the minute. It also punishes poor planning, because you arrive in the dark.

1. Know where the sun will come up

The sunrise point moves a long way through the year — in the continental U.S., roughly from northeast in June to southeast in December. Use the sun & moon map to draw the sunrise line from your spot, or check the sunrise azimuth table on any location page. Mountains to the east delay the actual sunrise and push it farther south than the flat-horizon direction.

2. Check the clouds the night before

A clear horizon with mid- or high-level clouds overhead is the classic recipe for color. The sunrise & sunset forecast scores each morning from National Weather Service sky cover. Low fog in valleys is its own reward if you can get above it.

3. Arrive 45 minutes early

Plan to be set up when blue hour begins (sun about 6° below the horizon). The best color often happens 10–20 minutes before the sun appears, when it lights the undersides of clouds. The golden hour calculator lists blue hour, golden hour and sunrise times for any place and date.

4. Settings through the phases

PhaseTypical settings (ISO 100, tripod)
Blue hourf/8–f/11, 2–15 s
Pre-sunrise glowf/11, 1/4–2 s
Sun on the horizonf/11–f/16, 1/60–1/250 s; bracket ±2 EV
Golden hourf/8–f/11, 1/125 s+

Shoot RAW, keep ISO low, and use a remote or 2-second timer. Bracket exposures when the sun is in the frame — the dynamic range can exceed what one frame holds.

5. Composition ideas

  • Face the sun for silhouettes and starbursts (f/16 with the sun partly hidden behind an edge).
  • Turn around: front-lit mountains glow with alpenglow while everyone else faces east.
  • Side-light reveals texture in dunes, rock and frost — shoot 90° from the sun.
  • Use a long lens on layered ridges in haze.

6. Don't leave too early

The first 30–60 minutes after sunrise are golden hour. Mist lifts off lakes, dew sparkles on grass and wildlife is active. Many of the best sunrise photographs are made after the sun is up.
