Pinnacle Mountain is a mountain peak in Pickens County, South Carolina at about 1,041 m (3,415 ft) above sea level. The nearest town is Pickens, about 17.0 km (10.6 mi) away (Pinnacle Mountain lies N of town).

Pinnacle Mountain is the tallest mountain contained entirely within the state of South Carolina (the state's highest point, Sassafras Mountain, is partially in North Carolina). It is located within Table Rock State Park in Pickens County, South Carolina. The summit of the mountain is accessible by hiking trails, the shortest of which is 4.2 miles one-way and begins at the Table Rock State Park Nature Center. Pinnacle Mountain is typical of the southern Appalachians. It's mainly an eroded mountain of gentler slopes with a summit completely cloaked, principally in poplar, oaks, and other hardwoods. There is some very steep forest terrain on the eastern side of the peak, Bald Rock, where there are some cliffs and slopes. In the late 1990s, some 600 plus prehistoric petroglyphs were discovered at Pinnacle Mountain. The petroglyphs, believed to be created by the Hopewell culture, pre-date...From the Wikipedia article “Pinnacle Mountain (South Carolina)”, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Golden hour & blue hour by month

Summits catch first and last light — alpenglow can turn rock pink or orange minutes before sunrise and after sunset while valleys stay in shadow.

Milky Way & night sky

From Pinnacle Mountain, the Milky Way core is visible in a dark sky from February through October. June gives the longest window (about 5.8 hours on a moonless night), and the core peaks around 26° above the southern horizon. Our light-pollution model puts the sky at about Bortle 3 (rural sky), good enough for detailed Milky Way images.

Photography tips for this mountain peak

  • Alpenglow lasts only a few minutes; set up and focus beforehand.
  • Clouds around the summit add drama — a clear blue sky is often the least interesting condition.
  • Photograph the peak from a lake, meadow or ridge at sunrise when the face that looks east lights up first.
  • Long lenses compress ridgelines; shoot the peak from several miles away to make it look massive.
  • Check road and trail conditions with the managing agency before you go.

Season: Early summer keeps snow on the peaks with green valleys below; autumn adds aspen or larch color in many ranges.

Suggested gear: Telephoto lens, Lightweight tripod, Warm layers, Microspikes in shoulder seasons. Work out exposures with the depth of field, ND filter and NPF rule calculators.
