The aurora's reach depends on geomagnetic activity (the Kp index) and your geomagnetic latitude. This checker pulls NOAA's 3-day Kp forecast and compares every 3-hour slot with the Kp needed at your location.
Green slots mean the aurora could show low on the northern horizon — cameras see it before your eyes do.
How to use the Aurora Forecast Checker
- Enter your location.
- Check the Kp needed and the forecast slots.
- Go somewhere dark with a clear northern horizon when slots turn green.
FAQ
Is a high Kp a guarantee?
No — clouds, moonlight and the solar wind's magnetic orientation (Bz) all matter. Kp is a 3-hour average.
