Sun & Moon Position Map

Light & sky · free · runs in your browser

Where exactly will the sun come up behind that ridge? This map draws lines from your location toward sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset for any date, and shows where the sun and moon are at any minute of the day. Click the map to move the pin, or use your current location.

Line up the moon over a lighthouse, the sun through an arch or alpenglow on a peak — the same planning landscape photographers do with The Photographer's Ephemeris or PhotoPills, free in your browser.

How to use the Sun & Moon Position Map

  1. Set the location (click the map, type coordinates, or use your location).
  2. Pick a date and drag the time slider.
  3. Orange = sunrise/sunset, blue = moonrise/moonset, dashed = sun and moon now.

FAQ

How accurate are the directions?
Within about a degree for the sun and a couple of degrees for the moon — fine for composition planning. Terrain blocks the horizon, so real sunrise over mountains comes later and farther south than the flat-horizon azimuth.
Does it work outside the U.S.?
Yes, the calculations work anywhere on Earth.
