Whether you can see the northern lights depends on geomagnetic latitude, not just geography. This calculator converts your coordinates to geomagnetic latitude and estimates the Kp needed for aurora low on the northern horizon and overhead.
Compare with NOAA's Kp forecast on our northern lights pages.
How it works
Geomagnetic latitude from the IGRF dipole pole (80.8°N, 72.7°W). Kp ≈ (62.5° − |λm|) ÷ 2 for horizon view.
FAQ
Is this exact?
No — it's a rule of thumb. Substorms, Bz and your horizon all matter. Cameras see aurora ~1 Kp earlier than eyes.
