Holliwell Covered Bridge is a covered bridge in Madison County, Iowa. The nearest town is Winterset, about 4.7 km (2.9 mi) away (Holliwell Covered Bridge lies ESE of town). It dates from 1880. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Holliwell Bridge is a wooden covered bridge in Madison County, Iowa. It was built over the Middle River in 1880. The Holliwell Bridge is located two miles southeast of Winterset over the Middle River. Built by Harvey P. Jones and George K. Foster for a cost of $1,180, it is the longest of the six remaining covered bridges in Madison County, spanning 110 feet with a total length of 159 feet. It is also the longest remaining timber bridge in the state of Iowa. The bridge is no longer in use, but was renovated and restored in 1995 at a cost of $225,000 ($475,000 today). It is featured in the film The Bridges of Madison County. From the Wikipedia article “Holliwell Covered Bridge”, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Milky Way & night sky
From Holliwell Covered Bridge, the Milky Way core is visible in a dark sky from March through September. June gives the longest window (about 4.5 hours on a moonless night), and the core peaks around 20° above the southern horizon. Our light-pollution model puts the sky at about Bortle 4 (rural / suburban transition), good enough for detailed Milky Way images.
| Month | Core visible (15th) | Hours | Max altitude | Direction |

Window when the galactic core is at least 10° high during astronomical darkness on the 15th of each month. Pick nights within a few days of the new moon. Plan exact nights with the Milky Way planner.
Estimated sky darkness: 4 Bortle 4 — Rural / suburban transition. Light domes are visible in several directions; the Milky Way is clear but lacks detail near the horizon. Modeled zenith brightness ≈ 20.9 mag/arcsec². Aurora needs roughly Kp 6.5+ to show low on the northern horizon here.
Weather & best season
Long-term NASA satellite data for this area show September as the clearest month (about 44% average cloud cover) and January as the cloudiest (65%). July is the warmest month and January the coldest, which matters for gear, snow access and how long batteries last at night.

Photography tips for this covered bridge
- Overcast days keep contrast low between the dark interior and the bright surroundings.
- Autumn foliage peaks are the most popular time — visit on weekdays to avoid crowds.
- Shoot from the stream bank to show the bridge, the water and its reflection together.
- Inside the bridge, the timber trusses make strong symmetrical compositions — use a tripod for long exposures.
- Bring a spare battery — cold weather and long exposures drain them fast.
Season: Peak fall color is the classic season; winter snow and spring blossoms are less crowded alternatives.
Suggested gear: Wide-angle lens, Tripod, Polarizer for foliage. Work out exposures with the depth of field, ND filter and NPF rule calculators.
