Landscape Composition Basics

Technique

Good composition is about guiding the eye. These principles are tools, not rules — but knowing them helps you see faster in the field.

Foreground, middle ground, background

Wide-angle landscapes feel three-dimensional when they include something close (rocks, flowers, ice), something in the middle (a lake, a forest) and something far (peaks, sky). Get low and close to the foreground — 1–2 meters — and use hyperfocal focusing or focus stacking to keep it all sharp.

Leading lines

Rivers, roads, shorelines, ridges and fences pull the eye into the frame. Lines that start at a corner and lead toward the subject are strongest.

Layers

With a telephoto, overlapping ridges in haze or fog create layers of fading tone — some of the most elegant landscape images. Overlooks above valleys at sunrise are ideal. The field of view calculator shows how much of a distant ridge a lens will cover.

Balance and the horizon

  • Place the horizon on a third when the sky or land is clearly more interesting.
  • Center it for symmetry, especially with reflections.
  • Keep it level — a tilted horizon is the most common distraction.

Simplify

Ask what the photograph is about and remove everything that doesn't support it: step closer, change lenses, or move a few feet to hide a distraction behind something else. Check the edges of the frame for bright spots and cut-off elements.

Light direction

  • Side-light reveals texture and depth — best for most landscapes.
  • Front-light is flat but good for color.
  • Backlight creates rim-light, glow and silhouettes.

Each location page's sun-path diagram and azimuth table tells you where the sun will be at sunrise and sunset in every season, so you can choose the light direction before you go.

Practice

Shoot the same scene in different light and seasons. Over a year you'll learn more about composition from one familiar place than from a dozen famous viewpoints.
