Located in Camden County, New Jersey, Scarborough Bridge is a covered bridge. The nearest town is Ellisburg, about 2.1 km (1.3 mi) away (Scarborough Bridge lies SE of town).

The Scarborough Bridge is a wooden covered bridge in the Barclay Farm neighborhood of Cherry Hill, New Jersey. It carries 2 lanes of Covered Bridge Road, as well as 2 sidewalks for pedestrians and bicyclists. The bridge was named after Bob Scarborough, a housing developer who established the Barclay Farm neighborhood, where the bridge is located. A bridge was needed in the area to extend the subdivision street system over the North Branch, which is a small tributary of the Cooper River. The bridge was designed by Malcolm Wells and was open to traffic on February 14, 1959. The bridge was renovated in 1993. Having a town truss design, the Scarborough Bridge is considered a historical landmark for the community. From the Wikipedia article “Scarborough Bridge”, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Milky Way & night sky

From Scarborough Bridge, the Milky Way core is visible in a dark sky from March through September. June gives the longest window (about 4.8 hours on a moonless night), and the core peaks around 21° above the southern horizon. Our light-pollution model puts the sky at about Bortle 8 (city sky), so expect visible sky glow; drive away from towns for better results.

Window when the galactic core is at least 10° high during astronomical darkness on the 15th of each month. Pick nights within a few days of the new moon. Plan exact nights with the Milky Way planner.

Estimated sky darkness: 8 Bortle 8 — City sky. Only bright constellations are visible; the sky glows orange or white. Modeled zenith brightness ≈ 18.09 mag/arcsec². Aurora needs roughly Kp 6.5+ to show low on the northern horizon here.

Weather & best season

Long-term NASA satellite data for this area show September as the clearest month (about 50% average cloud cover) and January as the cloudiest (62%). July is the warmest month and January the coldest, which matters for gear, snow access and how long batteries last at night.

Photography tips for this covered bridge

  • Overcast days keep contrast low between the dark interior and the bright surroundings.
  • Autumn foliage peaks are the most popular time — visit on weekdays to avoid crowds.
  • Shoot from the stream bank to show the bridge, the water and its reflection together.
  • Inside the bridge, the timber trusses make strong symmetrical compositions — use a tripod for long exposures.
  • Many covered bridges still carry traffic; stay off the roadway and watch for vehicles.
  • Bring a spare battery — cold weather and long exposures drain them fast.

Season: Peak fall color is the classic season; winter snow and spring blossoms are less crowded alternatives.

Suggested gear: Wide-angle lens, Tripod, Polarizer for foliage. Work out exposures with the depth of field, ND filter and NPF rule calculators.
