Roaring Camp Bridge is a covered bridge in Douglas County, Oregon. The nearest town is Drain, about 9.8 km (6.1 mi) away (Roaring Camp Bridge lies W of town). It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Roaring Camp Bridge was a private covered bridge spanning Elk Creek about 6 miles (10 km) west of Drain in the U.S. state of Oregon. Robert Lancaster built the bridge in 1929 to provide road access to his farm, and other local residents used it as well. Roaring Camp was also the name of a roadhouse near the bridge. Roaring Camp Bridge, clad with unpainted vertical 1-by-6-inch (2.5 by 15.2 cm) boards, had ribbon openings along its side walls. The Howe truss bridge, 88 feet (27 m) long, was demolished in 1995. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, it was delisted after its demolition. From the Wikipedia article “Roaring Camp Bridge”, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Milky Way & night sky
From Roaring Camp Bridge, the Milky Way core is visible in a dark sky from March through September. June gives the longest window (about 3.7 hours on a moonless night), and the core peaks around 17° above the southern horizon. Our light-pollution model puts the sky at about Bortle 2 (typical truly dark site), which is excellent for astrophotography.

Window when the galactic core is at least 10° high during astronomical darkness on the 15th of each month. Pick nights within a few days of the new moon. Plan exact nights with the Milky Way planner.
Estimated sky darkness: 2 Bortle 2 — Typical truly dark site. The summer Milky Way shows rich structure; clouds look like black holes in the stars. Modeled zenith brightness ≈ 21.7 mag/arcsec². Aurora needs roughly Kp 6.5+ to show low on the northern horizon here.
Weather & best season
Long-term NASA satellite data for this area show July as the clearest month (about 31% average cloud cover) and December as the cloudiest (79%). August is the warmest month and December the coldest, which matters for gear, snow access and how long batteries last at night.

Photography tips for this covered bridge
- Overcast days keep contrast low between the dark interior and the bright surroundings.
- Autumn foliage peaks are the most popular time — visit on weekdays to avoid crowds.
- Shoot from the stream bank to show the bridge, the water and its reflection together.
- Inside the bridge, the timber trusses make strong symmetrical compositions — use a tripod for long exposures.
- Many covered bridges still carry traffic; stay off the roadway and watch for vehicles.
- Bring a spare battery — cold weather and long exposures drain them fast.
Season: Peak fall color is the classic season; winter snow and spring blossoms are less crowded alternatives.
Suggested gear: Wide-angle lens, Tripod, Polarizer for foliage. Work out exposures with the depth of field, ND filter and NPF rule calculators.
