Donaca Lake — a lake in Linn County, Oregon at about 814 m (2,671 ft) above sea level — is a lesser-known subject for landscape photographers. The nearest town is Mill City, about 34 km (21 mi) away (Donaca Lake lies SE of town).
Donaca Lake is a 3-acre (12,000 m2), 41-foot (12 m) deep lake in Linn County, Oregon, United States. It lies at an elevation of 2,700 feet (820 m). The lake can be accessed via two different trails, one from the south and one from the north. The lake is located within an old growth forest in the Middle Santiam Wilderness near Sweet Home. Donaca Lake provides habitat for a unique strain of cutthroat trout and affords excellent fishing for lively 8-to-12-inch (20 to 30 cm) specimens. Though not required by law, catch and release methods are encouraged to protect this fishery. From the Wikipedia article “Donaca Lake”, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
Sunrise & sunset directions

| December solstice (Dec 21) | 7:43 AM | 123° ESE | 4:32 PM | 237° WSW | 22° | 8h 49m |
Azimuth is measured clockwise from true north (90° = east, 270° = west). Computed for 2026; values change by less than a degree from year to year.

Milky Way & night sky
From Donaca Lake, the Milky Way core is visible in a dark sky from March through September. June gives the longest window (about 3.5 hours on a moonless night), and the core peaks around 17° above the southern horizon. Our light-pollution model puts the sky at about Bortle 3 (rural sky), good enough for detailed Milky Way images.

Window when the galactic core is at least 10° high during astronomical darkness on the 15th of each month. Pick nights within a few days of the new moon. Plan exact nights with the Milky Way planner.
Estimated sky darkness: 3 Bortle 3 — Rural sky. Some light domes sit on the horizon, but the Milky Way still looks complex overhead. Modeled zenith brightness ≈ 21.67 mag/arcsec². Aurora needs roughly Kp 6.0+ to show low on the northern horizon here.
Weather & best season
Long-term NASA satellite data for this area show July as the clearest month (about 28% average cloud cover) and December as the cloudiest (78%). August is the warmest month and December the coldest, which matters for gear, snow access and how long batteries last at night.

Photography tips for this lake
- Mist often lifts off lakes on cold mornings after warm days, especially in autumn.
- Include shoreline rocks, reeds or a log as foreground to give the reflection depth.
- Expose for the brighter sky; reflections are typically half a stop to a stop darker.
- After sunset, long exposures smooth wind ripples into glass.
- Check road and trail conditions with the managing agency before you go.
Season: Autumn mornings bring mist and fall color; high-elevation lakes are usually ice-free only from early summer to mid-autumn.
Suggested gear: Tripod, Circular polarizer, Wide-angle lens, Waterproof boots. Work out exposures with the depth of field, ND filter and NPF rule calculators.
